Secondary students from the Applied Learning Course in Multimedia Storytelling recently embarked on a four-day study tour to Japan, promising an immersive dive into the nation’s art and cultural heritage.
The students explored Tokyo’s famous landmarks, from the iconic Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo Skytree to the historic Senso-ji Temple and the thundering gates of Kaminarimon. They also visited the renowned Waseda University.
The art-focused segment of the tour took students through the contemporary installations at Roppongi Hills Public Art and Design, the ‘2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan’ design and craft haven, and the innovative digital art displays at teamLab Planets Tokyo. They also visited the Toei Animation Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, which showcased a fusion of historical and contemporary Japanese art. They also participated in a traditional “Tokyo dyeing komon” workshop, immersing themselves in Japan’s rich textile heritage.
A highlight of the tour was the sharing session by Mr. Eric Siu, a new media artist from Hong Kong who is now based in Japan. Mr. Siu shared his journey of creating “Touchy”.
This celebrated art piece, a wearable device, ingeniously turns the wearer into a functioning camera, challenging the boundaries between technology and human interaction.
This study tour offered the students a unique opportunity to expand their perspectives and acquire new insights into their field of study.
