From Classroom to Workplace: Transformative Internship Experience

As the demand for “new collar” jobs in the Information and Communication Technology industry continues to grow, the Higher Diploma in Data Science (HDDS) programme at CLAP-TECH Pathway is equipping students with the soft and technical skills they need to succeed in the future workforce.

This summer, CLAP-TECH Pathway launched its first-ever internship programme, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience with renowned companies which are its industry partners including AutoSimply, CLP, IBM, and Towngas. During the summer internship programme, students worked alongside experienced IT professionals and learned about their professional and personal development.

The internship programme was a transformative experience for students like Scott Cheung, who interned at IBM this summer. “Before joining the internship programme, I wasn’t very familiar with the different positions in the workplace. I thought being a programmer means writing code,” he said. “During the internship, I learned that coding is not the majority of the work. The main focus is on communication skills, such as explaining how software functions can help support a company’s business.”

The success of the internship programme underscores the importance of developing “new collar” positions that are equipped with flexible skills. While these roles may not require a traditional tertiary degree, they are just as talented and capable as their degreed counterparts. With the help of innovative programmes that incorporate career and life development in the curriculum like CLAP-TECH Pathway, students can gain the skills they need to succeed in the evolving world of technology and thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.
